BlackBerry Messenger ‘BBM’ VS WhatsApp Messenger – iPhone / Android

September 23, 2013 by Abhay

According to the BlackBerry official blog, “Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible.” This clearly shows how excited all smartphone users are for the BBM for iPhone and Android release.

So here we bring to you the comparison between the two leading IM services accross the globe – BlackBerry Messenger ‘BBM’ VS WhatsApp Messenger.

WhatsApp Messenger was initially a paid application for iPhone users, but with the latest update the company made it free for the first year of use. Whereas, BBM has been released as a free application on the Apple AppStore. Similarly for Android users, WhatsApp Messenger is free only for the first year.

Voice and Video Calls

BBM™ Voice and BBM™ Video are exclusive services for BlackBerry BBM users, and will be soon available on iPhone and Android smartphones. WhatsApp Messenger allows it’s users to send videos and voice messages, but no real-time calling is present.

Privacy and Security

All BlackBerry services are widely known for high security and privacy, BBM is not any exception. BBM allows only those users who are in your list to view your profile picture and status updates. Whereas, anyone with your mobile number can view your WhatsApp Messenger profile pictures and status updates, no matter you know them or not. WhatsApp users, beware of stalkers!

BBM is currently available for BlackBerry, Android 4.X + and iPhone iOS 6 + (BBM for iPhone and Android is currently paused for download).

WhatsApp Messenger is widely available on a large number of mobile platforms and operating systems. So you can stay in touch with all your friends. WhatsApp Messenger can also be downloaded to your computer/laptop.

Setting Up

Setting up BBM requires one to have a Blackberry ID and a BBM pin. After setting up, the BBM user needs to add all his friends using their BBM pins.

WhatsApp users have to simply download the application and confirm their mobile number. Rest everything happens automatically and all your contacts with WhatsApp Messenger get added to your list.

We can clearly see who wins the competition, but WhatsApp Messenger already has a very large user base, which BlackBerry has to pull towards its BBM application. Which messenger do you prefer, do let us know in the comments below.
