How to Fix Cydia Error – “Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of”

April 30, 2013 by Abhay

We recently faced this error on Cydia which said “Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of” along with some other errors like “Problem with the merge list…” and “The package lists or status file could not be parsed or open“. These errors were followed by a blank screen under the Sections and Changes option in Cydia.

Since the evasi0n jailbreak was released, the reliability of Cydia has dropped. With less of updates for the Cydia tweaks and more of errors, Cydia app store is no more a haven for Apple users. This might indirectly divert the developers attention to Android.

This problem being faced is that the Cydia data structure is only capable of hosting a total of 65,535 packages, out of which default repositories come with a huge share of 40,000 packages. This means you have an available space of 20,000 packages if you wish to add more sources to Cydia.

How to fix this error?

To fix this error, you simply need to delete a few extra sources so that your packages limit does not exceed 65,535. This can be done by:

1. Open Cydia and go to Manage.

2. Here tap on Sources and slide over any extra sources, which you had added, to delete them. You may also tap on Edit at the top right to delete these sources.

** Please make sure you don’t delete any default repositories which include BigBoss, Cydia/Telesphoreo, Dev Team,, ZodTTD & MacCiti.

3. Reload Cydia and you will be able to use Cydia normally again.

I hope this post helped you out, keep following for more!
